Originally, my plan was to wait until the weather turned crummy to potty train so that I wouldn't be penned up inside for two or three days while I attempted to potty train. But, alas, on the Tuesday after Labor Day, I took M's morning diaper off and he promptly told me, "Mom, no diaper. I want unnawear. We go store buy M unnawear." And he hasn't worn a diaper since {although... I consider Pull-Ups diapers & we do use those every now and again}.
That Wednesday night I had a Mom's Night Out event and one of the mom's told me "you can officially say your kid is potty trained when you can take them out in public without an accident".
As well as M caught on to potty training, I would say that today was that day for us that I can say my son is potty trained. Might seem like small potatoes to some of you, but I consider it quite a milestone!
You see, today we went to MOPS and M told the childcare volunteer that he had to go potty. Again, maybe small potatoes to you, but that is the first time he has told a stranger that he had to go potty. At past MOPS events, I have put a Pull-Up on over M's "unnawear" and come back to find it soaking wet (or dry after a wet one had been changed).
I can say that for quite some time now, we have been accident free & mostly dry overnight, though I haven't braved taking away the overnight Pull-Up. Usually his first words in the morning, though, are "I gotta go potty!"
I have no secrets or tricks of the trade.
I didn't: read any magic books, make him run around naked for days, or make any fancy-dancy sticker charts.
I did: stay home for two days straight {minus a sanity run to Starbucks for a Pumpkin Spice Latte}, pump him full of fluids until he figured out how to pee-pee on the pot, encourage and praise him, clean up a bazillion accidents (just in the first couple days), stay calm, and play Pandora's "You Are My Sunshine" station in the bathroom.
Also, I highly recommend:
